Applied Linguistics Association of Serbia

The Applied Linguistics Association of Serbia (ALAS) continues the tradition of The Yugoslav Society of Applied Linguistics, founded in 1973, with its seat at the Faculty of Philosophy in Novi Sad. In 2003 the society changed its name into Applied Linguistics Association of Serbia and Montenegro, while it has been active under its present name (ALAS) since 2006. ALAS is a member of the International Association of Applied Linguistics (AILA - Association Internationale de Linguistique Appliquee) and the Permanent International Committee of Linguists (CIPL - Comite International Permanent de Linguistes).

ALAS was founded with the aim of enhancing studies in the field of linguistics, as well as carrying out research projects in the disciplines of applied and contrastive linguistics.

The governing body of ALAS is the Assembly, made up of all its members.

The ALAS Steering Committee consists of distinguished academics in different fields of language studies. In the period between 1989 and 2000, in collaboration with the Faculty of Philosophy in Novi Sad, ALAS organized seven conferences titled Контpастивна језичка истраживања [Contrastive Language Research], whose scientific results were published in books of proceedings under the above-mentioned title (YU ISSN 0352-174, UDK 803, 0/808,61/62). The first issue of the Association's annual journal Примењена лингвистика [Applied Linguistics] was published in 2000(ISSN 1451-7124, CIP 81`33). The journal is published once a year and accepts contributions in Serbian, English, German, French, Russian, Italian and Spanish. Submission guidelines for authors are available here.

In 2003, in collaboration with the Faculty of Philosophy in Novi Sad, the Applied Linguistics Association of Montenegro and the Applied Linguistics Association of Vojvodina, ALAS organized the First Congress Applied Linguistics Today in Herceg Novi (25-28 September); in 2006, in collaboration with the Faculty of Philology in Belgrade and the Faculty of Philosophy in Novi Sad, it hosted the Second International Congress Applied Linguistics Today at the Faculty of Philology in Belgrade (28-30 September), while the Third International Congress Applied Linguistics Today - Between Theory and Practice was held at the Faculty of Philosophy in Novi Sad (29-30 November and 1 December 2009) The following international congresses Applied Linguistics Today were held in the subsequent period: Challenges of Modern Times (Faculty of Philology in Belgrade, 12-14 October 2012), New Tendencies in Theory and Practice (Faculty of Philosophy in Novi Sad, 27-29 November 2015), Language, Literature and Interdisciplinarity (Faculty of Philology in Belgrade 12-13 October 2018) and Contemporary Theory and Practice (Faculty of Philosophy in Novi Sad, 28 May 2022).

It was at the Third Congress that the decision was made to launch a Festschrift series titled Primenjena lingvistika u cast [Applied Linguistics in Honour of] the first volume in this series was published in the spring of 2011, in honour of Professor Ranko Bugarski, one of the founders of the Yugoslav Society of Applied Linguistics. ALAS is also the co-publisher of the following Festschrifts in honour of: Professor Melanija Mikes, one of the co-founders (along with Professor Ranko Bugarski, Professor Vladimir Ivir, Professor Olga Miseska-Tomic, Professor Plemenka Vlahovic, and others) and first president of the Yugoslav Society of Applied Linguistics; Professor Dusanka Tocanac, president of the Applied Linguistics Association of Serbia and Montenegro, founder and first editor-in-chief of the Applied Linguistics journal; Professor Vesna Beric-Dukic, first secretary of the Yugoslav Society of Applied Linguistics and president of the Applied Linguistics Association of Vojvodina; Professor Radmila B. Sevic, president of the Yugoslav Society of Applied Linguistics and Applied Linguistics Association of Vojvodina.
